What on the surface may look like a curious purchase could prove to represent great foresight on the part of News Corp considering that other media companies such as the Washington Post generate the majority of their revenue from their education subsidiary, Kaplan. Although Wireless Generation is an education technology company and not a university, their area of expertise is in another high upside field; student data. The question the industry will need to keep their eye on will be whether the company continues to focus on data analytics, or whether they begin to leverage this strength and begin to combine it with News Corp’s wealth of content to begin addressing the needs uncovered by the data they are mining. This combination of resources could prove to be a formidable power in the education world and a great boon to both News Corp and students alike. |
